Time for prints or CD is an arrangement where a photographer and model agree work together, with the model providing his or her time, and the photographer providing images in return. This is most commonly used where both parties wish to build their portfolios without the expense of having to pay for the other party. Images may be provided in print (TFP) or digital (TFCD) form, or indeed both.
Some people view TFP/CD as working for free. When you consider the model's investment in clothing, makeup, etc. and the photographer's investment in equipment and time spent editing the photos - not to mention the time and effort put in at the shoot, and any expenses for travel, studio, styling, MUA, etc. - it is obvious that this is not true.
This will vary wildly from photographer to photographer. Variations include:
The best advice is to agree in advance exactly what will be provided, in what format, and how long after the shoot you should expect delivery. If you will only be receiving a selection of images, agree who makes the selection.
Some people feel that TFP/CD images should be for portfolio use only, others believe that more extensive rights are acceptable. As with so many things, there is no right or wrong answer. Discuss in advance and come to an agreement.
Sometimes a model may wish to edit a photo after it has been received. Most photographers are not happy with this. If you wish to do this, I recommend you discuss in advance with the photographer.
The common wisdom is that if the model is being paid full rates, then he or she is not entitled to any images from the shoot. Some photographers are flexible on this. Sometimes images can be negotiated for a reduced fee.
